Abstract
Anhydrous cyanoacetic acid is obtained from an aqueous solution of the acid which also contains inorganic salts by concentrating the solution in vacuo until the solution is substantially anhydrous, extracting the cyanoacetic acid from the evaporation residue by means of an aliphatic ester which boils at a temperature below 70 DEG C. in vacuo, separating the cyanoacetic acid solution which is formed, and removing the extraction agent from the solution. Suitable esters are, for example, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate and butyl acetate. The starting solution of cyanoacetic acid may be prepared by neutralizing chloroacetic acid with soda, adding the resulting solution to aqueous sodium cyanide, and adding sulphuric acid to the resulting solution to obtain cyanoacetic acid which contains sodium chloride and sodium sulphate as impurities. The cyanoacetic acid is concentrated in a vacuum which does not exceed 60 mm. Hg. at a temperature below 85 DEG C.
