Abstract
The methods of saccharifying cellulosic materials by means of formic acid described in Specifications 311,695 and 323,693, [both in Class 127], are modified by passing a current of an inert gas such as nitrogen through the mass after hydrolysis of the formates in the mass in order to carry off the formic acid. Preferably the hydrolysed mass is heated to 80 DEG C. and is caused to travel by means of a screw in a thin layer countercurrently with respect to the inert gas which may also be heated. The formic acid is chiefly collected in a condenser, the remainder being scrubbed out by a solvent such as ethyl ether or a mixture of benzene and methyl-tetrahydrofurane from which the acid can be recovered by azeotropic distillation.
