Abstract
Ethyl acrylate is prepared by heating ethyl 3-ethoxypropionate, ethyl alcohol and water in the presence of a dehydration catalyst, and removing the ethyl acrylate as azeotropes with ethyl alcohol and with water. The process may be effected by passing a mixture of the reactants into a reactor maintained at elevated temperature containing a further quantity of the same mixture together with the dehydration catalyst. An inert atmosphere may be used. Specified catalysts are sulphuric, phosphoric and p-toluene sulphonic acids, or an acid ester of a strong inorganic or organic acid. A suitable temperature is 100-200 DEG C. The ethyl acrylate may be separated from the azeotropes by passing them into a column containing a benzene head zone, so as to release the ethyl acrylate and form a benzene/water/ethyl alcohol ternary azeotrope.
