Abstract
Crude anhydrous D(+) galactose produced by the degradation of an oligosaccharide is purified by dissolving it in methyl or ethyl alcohol or a mixture of one of these with water, removing undissolved impurities from the resulting solution and recovering the purified galactose from the solution by crystallisation. Alternatively the galactose may be recovered from the alcoholic solution by evaporating the solution, dissolving the residue in methyl alcohol or ethyl alcohol and crystallising the purified galactose therefrom. The crude galactose used as starting material may be obtained by degrading an oligosaccharide, e.g. lactose, melibiose or raffinose with sulphuric or other mineral acid, neutralising the resulting solution with an alkali, concentrating the solution obtained and crystallising crude galactose therefrom.
