Abstract
Molasses and other sugar-contg. syrups are cleared by (a) treatment with ion-exchanger which separates mineral constituents, and (b) a separate treatment with an ion-exchanger which separates organic constituents. Sugar is recovered in high purity. The resins are easily regenerated with agents already available in the sugar factory. The molasses is pref. dil. with water; beet molasses is dil. 1:1 by vol. A (pref. weak) anionic resin in bicarbonate formis pref. The mineral salts are converted to the bicarbonate, and the mixt. may then be passed through a cationic resin in the H form, when the HCO3- ion is exchanged with H, and CO2 is evolved. This stage may be followed by chemical clearing with a pptng. agent, e.g. CaO, which removes remaining carbonates and a part of the organic components; or the CO2 may be blown off. A strong acid cationic resin in the H form is used.
