Abstract
1411455 Extracting sugar from molasses by the ion exclusion method PFEIFER & LANGEN 28 June 1973 [29 June 1972 30 June 1972 25 Nov 1972] 30886/73 Heading C6B A method of extracting sugar from molasses comprises passing mechanically purified molasses containing alkaline earth ions over an ion exclusion resin requiring periodic regeneration and eluting the resin with sugar-containing solutions and water, the eluate being taken off in a number of fractions, of which the purest fraction containing substantially no alkaline earth ions is passed on for sugar extraction, at least one intermediate fraction containing minor amounts of alkaline earth ions and some sugar is recirculated as recycled fraction for the elution of the resin, and the fraction of lowest purity containing the majority of the alkaline earth ions is removed from the cycle. When the ion exclusion resin is exhausted, it may be regenerated with the fraction of lowest purity which has been concentrated or with molasses containing from 30 to 70 wt per cent of dry substance. Some of the alkaline earth ions contained in the fraction of lowest purity may be precipitated by double reaction with an appropriate alkali metal salt, before such fraction is used for regenerating the ion exclusion resin. The double reaction may be effected with the ash of waste products from the sugar extraction. The alkaline earth ions may be removed by ion exchange from the intermediate fraction before the elution. Some of the alkaline earth ions may be removed from the mechanically purified molasses by passing it over a cation exchange resin before it is passed to the ion exclusion resin. When the cation exchange resin is exhausted, it may be regenerated with a sugar solution having a potassium content of 4 to 8% of dry substance which may be the concentrated fraction of lowest purity. Before the concentrated fraction of lowest purity is used for regenerating the ion exchange resin, some of the alkaline earth ions may be removed from the fraction by double reaction with an appropriate alkali metal salt e.g. the ash of the waste products from the sugar extraction.
