Abstract

Terephthalic and isophthalic acids are separately recovered from mixtures containing them and organic impurities by heating the mixture with an ether or ketone solvent, in which isophthalic acid is at least five times as soluble as terephthalic acid, so that the isophthalic acid and organic impurities dissolve in the solvent, recovering the substantially pure residual terephthalic acid from the solvent, and crystallizing out substantially pure isophthalic acid from the filtrate. The solvent is preferably capable of dissolving at least one per cent isophthalic acid, and diethyl ether, ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, diethylene glycol diethyl ether, triethylene glycol dimethyl ether, dioxan, tetrahydrofuran, 2 : 3-dihydro-2-formyl-1 : 4-pyran, acetone, pentane-2 : 4-dione, or cyclohexanone may be used. The process may be worked by heating the mixture with the solvent to a temperature at least within 50 DEG C. of the boiling point of the solvent. In examples, mixtures of terephthalic and isophthalic acids are separated by heating with (1), (2), (3) dioxan, (4) diethylene glycol diethyl ether, (5) tetrahydrofuran and (6) acetone; (7) a mixture obtained from the oxidation of xylenes is extracted with cyclohexanone and terephthalic acid obtained from the residue.
