Abstract
Terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid are separately recovered from mixtures containing them and other aromatic acid impurity by treating the mixture with a sufficient amount of a saturated monocarboxylic acid solvent, containing 2-4 carbon atoms, to dissolve all the isophthalic acid and aromatic acid impurity at a temperature near the boiling point of the solvent, separating the solution of isophthalic acid from the undissolved terephthalic acid and recovering the isophthalic acid by crystallization. Acetic acid, monochloracetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid and isobutyric acid may be used as solvents. The two examples describe the oxidation of mixed xylenes in acetic acid and the treatment of the oxidation product with additional acetic acid to obtain pure terephthalic and isophthalic acids.
