Abstract

An alkanol having 6-10 carbon atoms and contaminated with colour-producing oxygenated organic compounds is decolorised by treating with an aminoalcohol and separating an alkanol of improved colour from the resulting mixture. The process may be applied to mixtures of alkanols containing 6-10 carbon atoms. Preferably the amino alcohol contains one hydroxyl group and one amino group, e.g. monoethanolamine, monopropanolamine and monobutanolamine. The treatment may be carried out at 20 DEG -200 DEG C., preferably 60-80 DEG C. It is preferred to have also present a weak organic acid, e.g. glacial acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid. The purified alcohol product may be used in the preparation of esters, e.g. by reaction with dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides such as phthalic anhydride, adipic acid, azelaic acid and sebacic acid. The esterification is carried out in the presence of sulphuric acid at 130-180 DEG C. Specification 804,335 is referred to.
