Abstract
Alkyl esters of phthalic acids, which acids have been prepared by the oxidation of aromatic compounds not containing a tertiary carbon atom and, as a result, are contaminated with esters of formylbenzoic acid, are purified by treatment with molecular oxygen and simultaneous or subsequent distillation, the treatment with oxygen being effected in the presence of a manganese or copper catalyst in a proportion less than 10-6 gram atom per gram of the ester to be treated. The treatment with oxygen may be effected at 200-280 DEG C. under atmospheric, reduced or raised pressure. The proportion of iron compounds in the esters should not exceed 20 p.p.m. The starting materials may be obtained by oxidizing xylene, toluic acid, tolyl aldehyde, methylbenzyl chloride or ditolylethane with nitric acid, molecular oxygen or sulphur and esterifying the product, which may then be given a preliminary distillation. The purification treatment is applicable to alkyl esters of phthalic acids containing 1-4 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups. Examples are given of the purification of dimethyl terephthalate and dimethyl isophthalate.
