Abstract
The invention comprises a process for separating isophthalic and terephthalic acid from a mixture containing these acids, with or without orthophthalic acid and/or benzoic acid, which comprises digesting the mixture at a temperature of 85-200 DEG C. with an acetic acid solvent and separating the extract isophthalic acid solution from the undissolved solid terephthalic acid at temperatures in excess of 50 DEG C., the amount of acetic acid solvent empolyed being sufficient to dissolve the isophthalic acid present, at the temperature of separation. The isophthalic acid may then be recovered by cooling the extract solution, e.g. at 0-45 DEG C. and separating off precipitated isophthalic acid. Any orthophthalic or benzoic acid present may be separated during the preliminary digestion or from the final filtrate and the orthophthalic acid may be dehydrated in the presence of e.g. acetic acid, formic acid, carbon disulphide or benzene, to form phthalic anhydride. The first filtrate may also be treated with activated carbon prior to cooling. Examples are given. Specification 807,091 is referred to.
