Abstract
In the preparation of terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid or phthalic acid by oxidation of a dialkylbenzene by means of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in a liquid medium in which the resulting phthalic acid is insoluble or is only so slightly soluble that it precipitates therefrom in a solid form, the solid phthalic acid product so obtained is separated from the reaction liquid and purified by washing with an organic solvent and also with water. The liquid medium for the oxidation may comprise an excess of the dialkyl benzene to be oxidised or a liquid in which the dialkylbenzene is soluble such as an organic acid. Catalysts of one or more compounds of metals of variable valency may be used. Organic solvents mentioned are acetone or the same organic acid that is used as the liquid medium. In an embodiment of the invention, terephthalic acid produced by the oxidation of a p-dialkylbenzene using a liquid medium of an organic acid is washed with fresh organic acid, the solvent adhering to the product is removed by evaporation or water washing and the product is then washed once with hot or cold water at ordinary pressure. The organic acid washings may be recycled to the oxidation reaction. When washing terephthalic acid prepared by oxidation of p-diisopropylbenzene cold organic acid is used, but if the terephthalic acid is prepared from p-xylene hot organic acid is used. In an example, p-diisopropylbenzene in acetic acid is oxidized by air as described in Specification 737,439 and the crude terephthalic acid is washed at 20 DEG C. with acetic acid and then water; comparative treatments by washing with acetic acid or water alone are illustrated.
