Abstract
A process for the oxidation of a dialkyl substituted aromatic compound or a closely related oxygenated derivative of said compound in which one of the alkyl groups is replaced by an acyl, hydroxyalkyl or aldehyde group, to the corresponding dicarboxylic acid by oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas comprises a first step in which the oxidation is conducted at a temperature within the range 130 DEG -175 DEG C. and in the presence as a catalyst of a cobalt or manganese salt of an organic acid to produce mainly a monocarboxylic acid and a second step in which the product of the first step is oxidised to a dicarboxylic acid in the presence of a catalyst comprising a manganese salt of an organic acid. Cobalt and manganese naphthenates and acetates are specified as catalysts for the first stage of the process and manganese acetate or naphthenate, optionally together with cobalt naphthenate or acelate, for the second stage. Preferably temperatures slightly above the melting point of the monocarboxylic acid are employed in the second stage. The process may be operated continuously. The first stage may be carried out under mild conditions to avoid the formation of oxidation products tending to inhibit further oxidation to a dicarboxylic acid and the monocarboxylic acid may be separated from the other oxidation products present in the reaction mixture from the first stage by, e.g. solvent extraction, distillation or crystallisation. The process is particularly applicable to the preparaation of iso- and terephthalic acids from m- and p-xylenes. In examples: p-xylene is oxidised, p-toluic acid is extracted from the products by treatment with ether and aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, and oxidised to crude terephthalic acid which is purified by extraction, with acetone, the extract being oxidised with further p-toluic acid (1) and (2) and in a further process the separation of the p-tolmic acid intermediately is carried out by cooling the reaction mixture and filtering off the p-toluic acid and re-cycling the filtreate (3).
