Abstract

Crotonic acid is produced by subjecting crotonaldehyde to the action of an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of an aldehyde-oxidation catalyst comprising a metal salt of a carboxylic acid and as a solvent a carboxylic ester or a ketone. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of water and at temperatures from 15 to 60 DEG C. The organic solvent may constitute from 10 to 75 per cent by volume of the total charge. The catalysts specified include the acetates, crotonates and other carboxylates of manganese, cobalt and copper. The crude reaction mixture is distilled to recover the crotonic acid which may be further purified by distillation, crystallization or the method described in Specification 595,174. In examples, wet crotonaldehyde is oxidised to crotonic acid by means of oxygen as described above, the solvents being acetone, methyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone and the catalysts manganese acetate and a mixture of the acetates of cobalt and copper. Specification 165,728, [Class 2 (iii)], also is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 relates to the preparation of crotonic acid by oxidation of crotonaldehyde with an oxygen containing gas in the presence of aldehyde-oxidation catalysts and inert solvents generally, additional solvents mentioned being hydrocarbons and organic acids. In further examples: (1) dry crotonaldehyde in benzene is oxidised as above using a catalyst comprising copper and cobalt acetates; (2) the crude crotonic acid prepared according to any of the above examples is crystallized from saturated aqueous solution. A process for the purification of the acid is also described which forms the subject-matter of Specification 595,174. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
