Abstract

Aromatic carboxylic acids are prepared by oxidizing alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbons or their intermediate oxidation products by means of molecular oxygen in the liquid phase in an organic liquid medium which is stable under the oxidation conditions, in the conjoint presence of a metallic oxidation catalyst and bromine and in the presence of not more than 5% by weight of chloride ion based on the organic liquid medium present. The chloride ion may be introduced in the form of hydrochloric acid, a metal chloride e.g. a chloride of the metallic catalyst, or as an organic chloride. The oxidation is otherwise carried out under the conditions well known for such reactions. Examples describe the oxidation of p-xylene in propionic acid.
