Abstract
Alkyl benzenes are catalytically oxidized to the corresponding carboxylic acids by heating with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a lead tetra-alkyl, an aromatic aldehyde or hexachloroethane. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature in excess of 140 DEG C., with the promoter present in an amount of from 0.05 to 2 per cent by weight of the alkyl benzene. When an aromatic aldehyde is used as the promoter it is preferred to use the aldehyde corresponding to the particular alkyl benzene being oxidized. In examples, paraxylene is oxidized to terephthalic acid using varying experimental conditions.
