Abstract
In the production of an aromatic carboxylic acid by contacting an alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon, or a partially oxidised derivative thereof, with oxygen in the presence of manganese bromide and/or cobalt bromide as catalyst and of an aromatic carboxylic acid as solvent, the process is conducted in a reactor having walls of aluminium. The process is conducted in the absence of added water and it is desirable for water, formed in the oxidation, to be removed as soon as possible. When there is a tendency for water to accumulate in the reactor, it is desirable to add additional cobalt and/or manganese, in the form of their acetates. The example relates to the corrosion rate of aluminium test-pieces during the oxidation of o-xylene, p-xylene and p-toluic acid, respectively, to give phthalic or terephthalic acid. Other compounds which may be oxidised by the process are:- toluene, cumene, m-xylene, benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, benzyl benzoate, and methyl p-toluate. Specification 845,038 is referred to.
