1,240,849. Production of phthalic acids. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 20 Dec., 1968 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 60675/68. Heading C2C. A process for the production of phthalic acids, particularly terephthalic acid, comprises the oxidation of the corresponding xylene with oxygen or mixtures of oxygen and ozone in the presence of cobalt II salts, e.g. the acetate, naphthenate, benzoate, and alkane carboxylic acids, e.g. acetic acid, propionic acid, at elevated temperature, wherein the reaction mixture after the xylene oxidation and after separation of the phthalic acids which have separated out is continuously treated at a temperature of from 90-180‹ C. and at a pressure of from 1 to 10 atmospheres with a mixture of oxygen and ozone in a molar ratio of from 1:0À01 to 1:0À10 and then returned to the reaction; the mixture of oxygen and ozone used in this after-treatment may then be returned to the oxidation reaction as oxidizing agent.
