Terephthalic acid is made by a process comprising (1) passing molecular oxygen at 80-125‹ C. into a mixture of p-xylene and ptoluic acid containing 0À5-4% of p-xylene, the mixture being dissolved in an aliphatic carboxylic acid containing a heavy-metal oxidation catalyst, (2) introducing p-xylene into the mixture to maintain the relative concentrations of p-xylene and p-toluic acid within the limits stated above, (3) passing the mixture to a second reaction stage in which further oxidation with molecular oxygen is effected at 130-200‹ C. and (4) isolating terephthalic acid from the mixture leaving the second reaction stage. The aliphatic carboxylic acid in the reaction mixture may be acetic acid, and the catalyst may be a salt of cobalt or manganese. The process may be effected under a pressure of 2-30 kg. per sq. cm. Known initiators, e.g. olefines, ethers, ketones, aldehydes or peroxides, may be included in the reaction mixture. Examples are given.
