Abstract
1345853 Liquid phase oxidation of methylaromatic epels into aromatic carboxylic acids LABOFINA SA 15 Sept 1972 [17 Sept 1971] 42977/72 Heading C2C A process for the liquid phase oxidation of a methylaromatic compound or an intermediate oxidation product thereof, to an aromatic carboxylic acid comprises reacting in acetic acid in the presence of molecular oxygen the methylaromatic compound or its oxidation intermediate with a cobalt salt while maintaining such a concentration of cobaltic ions that (2x-A) is at least 0À2, x and A being respectively the molarity of the cobaltic ions and the cobalt salt in the reaction mixture. The reaction may generally be conducted at from 20‹ to 100‹ C. and at a pressure of from 0À2 to 20 atmos. The cobalt salt used may be any one which is sufficiently soluble in the reaction mixture to reach the desired concentration. The cobalt salts of aliphatic carboxylic acids generally fulfil this condition and cobalt acetate is particularly suitable. To maintain the active cobalt level in the process the reaction may be carried out in the presence of an aldehyde, e.g. acetaldehyde.
