1368309 Pyridine carboxylic acids DAICEL Ltd 29 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 60362/71 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of a pyridine carboxylic acid comprises oxidizing an alkyl pyridine, other than an α-substituted alkyl pyridine, in the liquid phase with molecular oxygen or a molecular oxygen-containing gas, at a temperature above 170‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a zirconium compound, bromine or a bromine compound and a soluble salt of a transition metal. The reaction is preferably carried out in an inert solvent. Examples describe the preparation of nicotinic acid and isonicotinic acid.
