1356770 Aromatic carboxylic acids VYZKUMNY USTAV ORGANICKYCH SYNTEZ 24 Nov 1972 [29 Nov 1971] 54313/72 Heading C2C Aromatic carboxylic acids are prepared by oxidizing alkylaromatic hydrocarbons with oxygen in the presence of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, a catalytic amount of a salt of a transition metal, bromine ions and an aliphatic aminonitrile. The alkyl-aromatic hydrocarbon preferably has the formula where R 1 is an alkyl group, R 2 is an alkyl group, or a hydrogen atom, and X is a hydrogen or chlorine atom or a methyl group. The aliphatic monocarboxylic acid is preferably acetic acid, the metal salt is preferably a salt of cobalt or manganese and the aliphatic aminonitrile compound is preferably HN(CH 2 CH 2 CN) 2 or N(CH 2 CH 2 CN) 3 .
