1294371 α-Hydroxycarboxylic acid esters BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 12 March 1970 [13 March 1969] 11895/70 Heading C2C Esters of α-hydroxycarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting the acid with an alcohol in the presence of an acid ion-exchanger and with the addition of water. An excess of alcohol is preferred and the ion-exchanger may be a phenolsulphonic acid resin or a polystyrene sulphonic acid resin. Acids of general formula where R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl (1-6 C), cycloalkyl (5-7 C), aralkyl (7-12 C), aryl (6-10 C) or a hydrogen atom are used and examples describe the preparation of methyl lactate, 2-hydroxy ethyl lactate and methyl glycolate.
