Abstract
Benzene dicarboxylic acids and their alkylesters are prepared by the oxidation of xylenes with air, oxygen or other molecular oxygencontaining gas in the liquid phase at temperatures of 120 DEG to 200 DEG C., if desired in the presence of known oxidation catalysts, and in the presence of an alkanol with 1-4 carbon atoms. In examples, a mixture of p-xylene and cobalt ethyl hexanoate is heated, oxygen is passed in and when absorption of oxygen has begun, methanol is slowly added, heating and addition of methanol are continued until absorption of oxygen ceases, xylene is distilled off and the reaction mixture which contains partly esterified terephthalic and toluic acids is completely esterified with methanol and the esters separated by distillation. Similarly a mixture of xylenes gives the mixed dimethyl phthalates and methyl toluates and m-xylene gives dimethyl isophthalate and methyl m-toluate.
