Abstract

A process for the production of trimellitic acid comprises in a first stage oxidising pseudocumene in the liquid phase with a molecular oxygen containing gas in the presence as catalyst of a cobalt or manganese salt or mixtures thereof to form a partially oxidised mixture corresponding approximately to the formula C6H3(COOH)x(CHO3)3-x where x is within the range 1.3 to 1.8 and in a second stage oxidising the said mixture further to trimellitic acid by treatment with nitric acid at an elevated temperature. The trimellitic acid thus obtained may be dehydrated to give trimellitic anhydride by a heat treatment e.g. heating at 230-235 DEG C. The first stage oxidation is preferably carried out at 190-220 DEG C. in acetic acid solution using air as the oxidant and cobalt and/or manganese acetate, nitrate or naphthenate as catalyst. The nitric acid oxidation is preferably carried out under pressure at 180-85 DEG C. after the volatile components and diluent, if any, have been removed from the mixture. Examples are given.
