Abstract
Aromatic hydrocarbons are obtained from a C3-C5 acyclic hydrocarbon or a mixture thereof with a cyclic hydrocarbon by reaction with iodine in the presence of a molten salt composition comprising a minor proportion of a hydrogen iodide-binding substance together with the inorganic iodide formed by reaction of hydrogen iodide therewith at 425-600 DEG C. for 0.1-5 seconds while contacting the molten salt with not more than 0.5 mol. of oxygen per mol. of acyclic hydrocarbon to give not more than 50% conversion of the acyclic hydrocarbon. The preferred salt composition is 75-99% weight lithium iodide which forms the source of iodine and 25-1% weight lithium oxide or hydroxide. Steam may also be added to the feed. In examples: (1) isobutene is converted to p-xylene; (3) propene and toluene are converted to naphthalene and benzene; (4) propene is converted to benzene; (5) isobutene and m-xylene are converted to p-xylene, dimethylnaphthalenes and trans - m,m1-dimethylstilbene.
