Abstract
Aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from other hydrocarbons by selective solution of the aromatic hydrocarbon or aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from olefins by selective solution of the latter in an aqueous solution of silver fluoborate and/or fluosilicate and optionally a stable fluoborate or fluosilicate of a second metal cation which has a charge to ionic radius in Angstrom units of more than one. The second metal may be a Group II metal with an atomic number of 4-56, copper, lead or lithium, the molar ratio of silver to second metal may be 1-10:1 and the second metal concentration may be 4-12 molar. Temperatures of 0 DEG -50 DEG C. are used. Aromatic hydrocarbons may be selectively dissolved in the presence of saturated hydrocarbons and by using high silver concentrations (e.g. 6-12 molar silver fluoborate) of olefins, although with low concentrations the olefin is selectively dissolved. Acetylene should not be present in concentrations of more than 1%.
