561,293. Recovering sulphuric acid. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. May 8,1942, No. 6237. Convention date, March 29, 1941. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (ii)] Sulphuric acid containing organic impurities, such as spent catalyst used in the alkylation of hydrocarbons, is promptly diluted, preferably at low temperature, causing separation of part of the organic matter. The separated acid is concentrated in three stages; firstly at a temperature (120-140‹ C.) below the foaming point, secondly at a temperature (160-185‹ C.) below that at which substantial reaction with the remaining organic contaminants takes place, and finally at the boiling point (e.g. 210-240‹ C.) of acid of the required concentration.
