Abstract

<PICT:0794389/III/1> Acidic components are removed from a gaseous or liquid stream by countercurrently contacting said stream with an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide in an absorption zone, and drying the thus-formed wet stream with a more concentrated (e.g. a solid) alkali metal hydroxide, the alkali metal hydroxide in the absorption zone being obtained by adding water to concentrated aqueous alkali metal hydroxide obtained from the drying zone. Fluid streams referred to are hydrogen containing hydrogen sulphide or carbon dioxide, gasoline containing mercaptans and hydrocarbons containing hydrogen sulphide. The concentration of the hydroxide in the absorption zone should not exceed 25 per cent, to avoid crystallization of sodium sulphide, carbonate or other compound formed. If a solid is used in the drying stage it is preferred to have two zones in parallel to permit continuous operation when recharging. One illustrated embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) involves the use, in connection with removal of hydrogen sulphide from hydrogen, of solid sodium hydroxide in the drying zone and recirculation of dilute caustic soda in the absorption zone, said zones being superposed in a single column. A second embodiment (see Fig. 2) involves the use, in connection with removal of hydrogen sulphide from a gaseous stream, of a concentrated aqueous solution of caustic soda in two drying zones 25 and 26 and a more dilute caustic soda in an absorption zone 24, wherein in each of said zones liquid is recirculated from a lower to an upper part of the zone. More than one absorption zone or more than two drying zones may, if desired, be used; in place of the perforated plates illustrated or bubble trays &c., packing such as Raschig rings may be used.
