Abstract
710,564. Treating gases with liquids. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd., and WEBSTER, T. J. Aug. 7, 1952 [Sept. 7, 1951], No. 21160/51. Class 55 (2) A gas mixture is formed in co-current contact with a liquid capable of irreversibly absorbing a constituent downwardly or horizontally through the reaction section of a scrubbing tower operated at atmospheric or higher pressures at a linear velocity greater than the priming velocity when the gas mixture is passed counter-current to the liquid. The absorbent liquid may be recirculated and replaced as a batch when exhausted or equal quantities of fresh and spent liquid may be continuously injected and withdrawn. A tower 1 with a packed section 2 receives gas and liquid at the top and includes a reservoir 5 at the bottom from which liquid is recirculated by a pump 9. Gas is withdrawn below a baffle 7. Spent liquid is extracted by a pump 12 and fresh liquid introduced by a pump 15 of equal capacity both pumps being driven by a motor 17. Air to be separated by liquefaction and rectification may be scrubbed with caustic soda to reduce the carbon dioxide content to about 3 parts per million.
