Abstract

564,734. Recovering sulphur dioxide. STEVENS, A. H. (American Smelting & Refining Co.). June 29, 1942, No. 8955. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 1 (i) and 1 (ii)] In the recovery of sulphur dioxide from gas mixtures by scrubbing with an aromatic amine, the exit gases from the absorber are treated first with sodium carbonate solution and then with sulphuric acid to remove entrained amine. The acid and alkali solutions are preferably mixed and treated with steam, and the vapour phase is passed into the used amine reagent to expel the sulphur dioxide therefrom, whereupon the stripped reagent is returned to the absorber. The liquid phase is separated into an amine phase, for return to the absorber, and an aqueous phase, which may be partly returned to the mixed solutions.
