Abstract
533,633. Hydrogen peroxide. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Mathieson Alkali Works). Jan. 23, 1939, No. 2336. [Class 1 (ii)] Hydrogen peroxide is prepared by the oxidation of p-hydrazotoluene in solution in an aromatic hydrocarbon, containing two benzene nuclei, which is a stable liquid at the reaction temperature and the vapour pressure of which at 100‹C. is less than 5 mm. Suitable solvents include diphenylmethane. di - p - tolylmethane, a - a sdiphenylethane, a - a - di - p - tolylethane, a - a - diphenylpropane, a - # - - di - p - tolylpropane and a - y - diphenylpropane. The p - azo toluene produced is subsequently reduced to p-hydrazotoluene and the process continued as a cyclic process. In an example a solution of p-azotoluene in 1.1-di-p-tolyethane is reduced with a liquid sodium amalgam to yield an emulsion from which a p-hydrazotoluene solution is separated ; the solution is blown with oxygen in the presence of water to yield an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide which is decanted off leaving a solution of p-azo-toluene in 1:1- di-p-tolylethane which is again reduced and oxidized in the cycle. Specification 501,385 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 501,385.
