Abstract

A process for the separation of 4,41-dihydroxy diphenyl sulphone from a mixture thereof with the isomeric 2,41-dihydroxy diphenyl sulphone comprises contacting the mixture with 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and separating the resulstant solution of 1,1,2,2-tetrachoroethane containing substantially only the 2,41-isomer from the 4,41-isomer which is only slightly soluble in the tetrachloroethane. The isomeric mixture may be prepared by reacting phenol with sulphuric acid or p-phenol sulphonic acid in the known manner and the tetrachloroethane may then be added to the reaction mixture which is cooled to about 100 DEG C. and the 4,41-isomer separated off e.g. by filtration. An example is given. Specification 915,767 is referred to.
