Abstract

1,148,975. Dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone. WITCO CHEMICAL CO. Inc. 19 April, 1967, No. 17947/67. Heading C2C. A process for producing dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone comprises initially reacting substantially stoichiometric proportions of phenol and concentrated or fuming sulphuric acid at a temperature of from 130‹ to 170‹ C. under conditions of agitation, then adding benzene in small increments to the reaction mixture at a rate to maintain the reaction mixture within the aforesaid temperature range, removing the water formed during the reaction by azeotropic distillation and recovering the dihydroxydiphenylsulphone from the reaction mixture. An example is furnished.
