Abstract
2-Naphthalene sulphonic acid is produced by sulphonating naphthalene with sulphuric acid in presence of at least 10%, based on the weight of naphthalene, of 1-naphthalene sulphonic acid, 1 : 6-naphthalene disulphonic acid and/or 1 : 7-naphthalene disulphonic acid; a mixture of the three latter acids obtained as a by product in a previous sulphonation may be used. The sulphonation may be effected in presence of a non-reactive entraining agent forming with water an azeotrope which distils from the reaction mixture. It is preferred to dilute the hot reaction mixture with aqueous sulphuric acid to a concentration of 25-35% H2SO4, cool until 2-naphthalene sulphonic acid hydrate precipitates and separate the precipitate.
