Abstract
2-Amino-4-methylpyrimdine is obtained by oxidizing 1-butinol-3 to 1-butinone-3 and treating this (preferably as its water azeotrope) with a guanidine salt, preferably in the presence of sulphuric acid. In examples: (1) a 1-butinol-3 is oxidized with potassium dichromate in aqueous sulphuric acid at 20 DEG C. and the resulting water azeotrope of 1-butinone-3 is warmed at 30 DEG C. with guanidine nitrate in 40 per cent sulphuric acid; (2) 1-butinone-3 water azeotrope is warmed at 80 DEG C. with guanidine sulphate in 50 per cent sulphuric acid.
