Abstract

Magnesium and its alloys, particularly those containing zirconium as described in Specification 511,137, are given a corrosion-resistant surface by treatment in an aqueous solution containing chromic acid ions, magnesium sulphate and manganous sulphate and having a pH of from 3 to 6. The chromic acid ions are preferably provided by potassium and/or sodium bichromate, preferred solutions containing 50-150 gm./litre of bicromate, 30-70 gm./litre of Mg. So4. 7H2O and 30-70 gm./litre of Mn. So4. 4H2O. The solutions may be used at room temperature or at any temperature up to and including boiling point.
