Abstract
Magnesium and its alloys, particularly those containing zirconium as described in Specification 511,137, are given a corrosion-resistant surface by treatment in an aqueous solution containing chromic acid ions, magnesium sulphate and manganous sulphate and having a pH of from 3 to 6. The chromic acid ions are preferably provided by potassium and/or sodium bichromate, preferred solutions containing 50-150 gm./litre of bicromate, 30-70 gm./litre of Mg. So4. 7H2O and 30-70 gm./litre of Mn. So4. 4H2O. The solutions may be used at room temperature or at any temperature up to and including boiling point. Specifications 510,353 and 558,983, also are referred to.
