Abstract
858,517. Welding by fusion. WALTHER & CIE A.G. Dec. 12, 1957 [Dec. 15, 1956], No. 38636/57. Class 83 (4). Tubular members 1, 2 are butt-welded using a backing ring 4 which is subsequently removed by washing out with water. The ring may be watersoluble and composed of sodium chloride and magnesium chloride with a binder of water glass or of calcium carbonate, alum and boric acid with a binder of water glass. Alternatively, the ring may be insoluble but formed of a composition, e.g. a natural earth, a starch compound, alum, sodium chloride and sodium silicate, which disintegrates to a mud when subjected to the washing out operation. The ring may be coated with lacquer. The Specification also refers to a known method in which a metal backing ring is chemically decomposed, e.g. by acid. Specification 709,824 is referred to.
