Abstract
532,786. Magnesium sulphate. OCEAN SALTS (PRODUCTS). Ltd., and ADAMS, B. A. Sept. 20, 1939, No. 26251. [Class 1 (iii)] In the preparation of magnesium sulphate from magnesium hydroxide prepared from sea water or other natural waters, the magnesium ions are separated from impurities by the use of an organic base exchange material, e.g. that described in Specification 450,308. The washed magnesium hydroxide is dissolved in an acid and the solution is passed through the base exchange body, which has been previously treated with an acid. The magnesium ions are adsorbed in place of hydrogen ions. The material is then washed with water to remove chlorine ions and the magnesium is dissolved out with sulphuric acid. Free acid in the resulting solution may be neutralized with magnesium hydroxide or adsorbed by an amino resin as described in Specification 450,309. The acid displaced by the magnesium from the base exchange body may be used for dissolving further, quantities of magnesium hydroxide.
