Abstract

Ferrous sheets or other ferrous articles are passivated by pickling in dilute sulphuric acid, washing in water, dipping in dilute nitric acid, washing in water, dipping in chromic acid solution, washing and drying. A suitable chromic acid solution contains 50 grams CrO3 in 100 mls. of water or an equivalent amount of sodium chromate, potassium chromate or potassium dichromate may be used. The treatment is stated to be suitable for the treatment of 4 per cent silicon steel used as cores for electrical machines.
