Abstract

The surfaces of aluminium or aluminium alloy articles are brightened by immersion in a hot aqueous solution of 1-6 ozs. of an alkali metal hydroxide and 2-6 ozs. of an alkali metal nitrate or nitrite per gallon, at a temperature of 140 DEG -170 DEG F. After such treatment, the articles may be immersed in a 15-35 per cent. nitric acid solution, or in a solution containing 15-25 per cent. nitric acid with 0.25-0.5 per cent. hydrofluoric acid, or in a sulphuric acid anodizing solution. Specification 901/49 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) is referred to.
