Abstract
Sintered or other porous metallic articles, e.g. sintered iron articles, are subjected to the action of a basic solution and then to an acid cleaning solution prior to electro-depositing a metallic coating thereon from an acid bath (see Group XXXVI). The article may be buffed or polished before subjecting it to the action of the basic solution. This latter solution may be in the form of an aqueous solution or the solution medium may be an organic solvent such as alcohol, benzene, toluene, or xylene. The amount of basic material, e.g. sodium carbonate, may be from 1 to 3 per cent by weight of the solvent. The acid cleaning solution may be any strong acid solution or mixture of acid solutions, e.g. 50 per cent aqueous hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid, or a mixture of solutions of such acids, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, or an organic acid such as glacial acetic acid, ethyl phosphoric acid, or ethyl sulphuric acid.
