Abstract

The surfaces of metals such as ferrous metals are blackened by immersion in an aqueous solution containing in parts by weight 50 to 90 parts alkali metal hydroxide, 0.1 to 50 parts alkali metal nitrate and/or 0.1 to 50 parts alkali metal nitrite and at least one of the following: (A) a trace to 20 parts of at least one cyclic sulphur containing organic compound selected from 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, benzothiazyl di-sulphide or 2-mercaptoimidazoline; (B) from 0.0001 to 15 parts of an alkyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate; (C) from 0.0001 to 20 parts of a metallic salt of a sulphonated dye selected from di - phenyl - dis - azo - bis - 8 - amino - 1 - naphthol - 3,6 disulphonic acid, 8 - anilino - 5 - (p - hydroxy anilino) - 1 - naphthalene sulphonic acid and sulphonated anthraquinone vat dyes. The solution boils between 255 DEG F. and 325 DEG F. and the treatment is effected at boiling temperature.
