Abstract

Bright nickel is electrodeposited from an aqueous nickel bath containing at least one organic sulphur compound chosen from unsaturated aliphatic sulphonic acids and aromatic sulphonit acids sulphonomides or sulphonomides, and a mixture of (i) a quinolinium phosphate <FORM:1042298/C6-C7/1> where R is C1 to C4 alkyl, allyl, or methallyl; R1 is methyl, ethyl, or vinyl;n is 0 or 1; or the corresponding isoquinolinium or pyridinium phosphate; and (ii) the 2- or 4-vinyl derivative of N-allyl-or N-methallyl-pyridinium chloride or bromide. The weight ratio of the heterocyclic compounds in the mixture may be from 1:3 to 3:1. Typically from 1 to 20 g/l of sulphur brightener and 0.001 to 30 g/l of heterocyclic nitrogen brightener are used. As described the sulphur and heterocyclic nitrogen brighteners are added to Watts baths but they may also be used in high chloride baths.
