Abstract

A bath for blackening ferrous surfaces consists of an aqueous solution of 25 parts of sodium or potassium hydroxide or both and 3-10 parts of sodium or potassium thiosulphate or both. It may also contain 3-8 parts of sodium or potassium nitrate or both; the amount of water may be such as to yield a boiling point of 240-260 DEG F., at which temperature the bath may be used. The ferrous surfaces may be first immersed in an alkali cleaner, washed and then immersed in a pretreatment bath comprising 87 per cent of phosphoric acid (of 85 per cent concentration) and 13 per cent concentrated hydrochloric acid, with or without water and with or without a wetting agent of the sodium aryl sulphonate type. After blacking, the surfaces may be rinsed, dried and dipped in hot oil.
