Abstract

Prior to coating, aluminium and aluminium alloys are treated in an aqueous solution containing caustic alkalies and soluble chromates and the oxide layer formed thereby at least partially dissolved. The alkali: chromate ratio may vary between 0.5:1 and 45:1 and the solution may also contain phosphates, citrates, permangenates or wetting agents. The oxide layer may be dissolved in an acid solution, e.g. suphuric, phosphoric, nitric, hydrofluoric, hydrochloric, chloric, bromic, chromic, formic, acetic, lactic, citric, oxalic, chloracetic, tartaric or sulphosalicylic; a mixture of nitric acid and ammonium fluoride; or an alkaline solution. The articles may then be electroplated, e.g. with copper, followed by nickel. Alternatively, the electrolytic solution may be used, before current is passed, to remove an oxide film.
