Abstract

The porous oxide surface formed on aluminium or aluminium alloys by anodizing, is sealed in two stages, (1) treating with an aqueous bath under such conditions that only partial sealing of the pores is effected, (2) completing the sealing with sodium silicate solution at 150 DEG F. or above for 5-30 minutes. The first solution may also be sodium silicate in which SiO2:Na2O is above 2:1, and treatment is effected at 120 DEG F. for 0.5-5 minutes. The second silicate bath preferably has a SiO2:Na2O ratio of up to 4:1 and is used at 190 DEG F. The same silicate solution may be applied in both stages, reducing the immersion in stage (1) to 1 minute, to avoid etching, raising the surface in the air to cool before immersion in the second bath. Other aqueous baths used in stage (1) include sodium dichromate, molybdate, disodium phosphate, or hot water at 150 DEG C. to boiling point. A wide range of anodizing solutions forming porous coatings is referred to.
