Abstract
Aluminium fluoride is obtained by the treatment of aluminium fluosilicate with hydrofluoric acid. The reaction may form a step in a cyclic process wherein aluminium oxide or hydroxide is first treated with excess of hydrofluosilicic acid at the boiling point to form the fluosilicate, and the latter then treated in the cold, with or without separation of the mother liquor, with aqueous hydrofluoric acid to precipitate aluminium fluoride and regenerate hydrofluosilicic acid. An alternative cyclic process comprises the dry treatment of the fluosilicate with gaseous hydrofluoric acid, the absorption of the resulting gases (hydrofluoric acid and silicon tetrafluoride) in water, and the use of the hydrofluosilicic acid so obtained to produce the aluminium fluosilicate from aluminium oxide or hydroxide. The aluminium fluoride may be dehydrated at temperatures between 100 and 600 DEG C. in an aluminium vessel.
