Abstract

Beryllium-containing minerals are treated at above 100 DEG C., say at 600 DEG C., with gaseous hydrofluoric acid. In one example, beryl is treated in an iron or nickel tube at 600 DEG C. until silicon fluoride is no longer evolved. The cooled mass is extracted with water, ferric oxide and aluminium fluoride remaining undissolved, and beryllium hydroxide is precipitated by ammonia. The fluorine may be recovered from the mother liquors. In another example, beryl is treated in an aluminium-lined rotary furnace with a mixture of silicon fluoride and hydrogen fluoride. A statement of prior art relates to the production of sodium beryllium fluoride and sodium aluminium fluoride by heating beryl with sodium silicofluoride at 650-700 DEG C. Treatment of beryl with aqueous hydrofluoride is also referred to.
