Abstract

Caustic alkali is made by treating alkali sulphate with solid strontium oxide or hydroxide. The latter may be added in excess to a concentrated solution of the sulphate, or solid alkali sulphate, such as Glauber's salt may be introduced into a suspension of strontium hydroxide. The heat of slaking aids the decomposition, and the excess strontia separates on cooling. The strontium sulphate may be reconverted into oxide by the intermediate formation of sulphide or hydrosulphide, or by boiling with sodium carbonate in known manner, or by treating with ammonium carbonate, or ammonia and carbon dioxide and calcining the strontium carbonate formed, for instance in a rotary furnace at 1200 DEG C. The carbon dioxide evolved, and the ammonia recovered from the ammonium sulphate lyes are used again.
